Last Week - 4

Last week I showed my students how to make beaded hair clips, it was quite fiddly but the children really enjoyed the project. A lot of them put the finished clips into their hair as soon as they were completed.

Last week we started to decorate for Valentines day as this falls at the same time as Chinese New Year. We painted very small ceramic pots and styrofoam hearts. The painting was a challenge as I had to make sure they had finished painting and make sure they dried within 1 hour and still left time to complete the second activity. I tried to make sure everyone only used the paint sparingly but in a busy class I missed one girl who covered her pot with paint - we had to get a hairdryer out to make sure it was a little bit dry ! Also only one breakage with 28 girls - not bad !

Last week I started to teach the children how to make teddy bears. It was a fun lesson showing the girls how to push in the eyes and nose of the bears. There are a few bears that will have very unique faces !

Later in the week I tried to source some supplies from an interesting place. Deep in Sha Tin industrial area I called to make an appointment. When I got there it was a very strange place, it was basically a 80 sq foot cupboard with lots of stationery stacked up and one desk. The person I had dealt with spoke great English and her mother was the owner, a very elderly, elegant lady who thought it was hilarious that I was looking for coloured pencils.

Last week was the first week of my craft lessons at Clear Water Bay School. I showed the children how to make beanie hats from fleece. It was a really simple project that I showed the Tuesdays class using a blanket stitch but swapped to easier overstitch for Wednesdays class. The hats were popular as it was really cold in Hong Kong, not as cold as Europe or North America but coldest I have been in Hong Kong in the 2 half years I have been here.

I am learning a lot about being a business owner, about time !, as I have been in business for a whole year. So now I am coming to grips with all the information I have been storing and now organizing it so an accountant will be able to make sense out of it. So often I just get on with the day-to-day work I often forget I am the CEO as well as everything else. If I don’t take care of these things no one else will.
